“God, make me available!”
This has become my new prayer.
Today’s world is full of busy people. We have work, school, doctor’s appointments, meetings, practices, and all sorts of other things that take away our time.
As a matter of fact, there are many days where from the point I wake up until I get in the bed at night, I’m doing something. All of this business has led us to become unavailable.
We live by a planned schedule. You have an appointment at this time, a meeting at this time, and you have to be home by a certain time. Even when we do ministry, we want to put a time on it. “Well, I’ll help rake that person’s yard, but we need to be done by 3 p.m. or, sure, I’ll come to that, what time will it be over?”
While planned ministry is awesome and commanded by scripture, many of Jesus’s greatest times of ministry were when people just came up to Him.
*The water into wine, feeding the 5000, healing the blind man, calming the seas, etc.*
Time and time again, what we see is people coming up to Jesus at times where it wasn’t necessarily planned and He helped them because He was available.
So many times we get so caught up in our business that we miss the ministry that Jesus is wanting us to do right in front of us.
Could it be helping that stranger with the flat tire that you just passed on the highway?
Could it be giving food to the homeless or needy?
Could it be taking time to talk to someone that is in need of company? Absolutely, but it could be other things as well.
Each Christ-follower has a sphere of influence on a daily basis. Your co-workers, family, friends, etc. Could it be that those people have wanted or needed help and you’ve ignored that call?
Could it be that a co-worker or fellow student isn’t saved and you’ve been putting off sharing the gospel with them?
In this life, it’s so easy to get caught up in things that just don’t matter. It’s so easy to get busy and miss everything going on around us. It reminds me of this song that has stuck with me over the years.
“Give me your eyes for just one second, give me your eyes so I can see. Everything that I keep missing. Give me your love for humanity. Give me your arms for the broken-hearted, the ones that are far beyond my reach.Give me your heart for the ones forgotten, give me your eyes so I can see.”
My prayer for you and for myself is that we would be available. That we would stop getting caught up in the business just long enough to see the hurting and need for Jesus around us.
I don’t want to miss out on one opportunity I could have had to share the gospel, so God, make me available.
Make me available to the ones that need to know about you. Make me available to people that are in need. Make me available to those who have fallen away. Make me available not for my own personal gain, but for your glory. Here I am, send me!
